If you own a vacation home nine times out of ten you want to use it for rest and relaxation. But that’s not usually the case to start with; you typically will need to dedicate an entire day to opening (cleaning and maintaining) your vacation home.
Opening a Vacation Home
We would say it’s smart to take a day before the season starts to open your vacation home, and another day at the end of the season to close it. Yes, it sounds like a lot of work, but every vacation home has different needs. For example, a beach cottage requires different maintenance than a mountain cabin.
Here’s is a list of a few tasks to help start the process:
- Turn on utilities
- Clean the bathroom and see what you need in the kitchen
- Check the roof/plumbing for leaks
- Show your lawn some love
Closing a Vacation Home
When closing your home, make sure you focus on keeping your home safe in your absence by performing the following tasks:
- Secure all windows and doors
- Turn on your alarm
- Close the storm shutters
- Take the trash out
