Outfitting your home with the security it deserves

Security systems, much like other technologies today, have become highly sophisticated recently. Security systems now provide a variety of benefits to the owner, including peace of mind and absolute control. They’re now offered as wireless systems and home control devices. Other features that come with select security systems include controls for watering schedules, lighting and even the thermostat of your home.

While security systems may seem expensive, few people can put a price on their loved ones’ safety. Expenses include setup and installation and a monitoring or monthly fee. The monthly rate ensures that you are covered 24/7. Over time, security systems pay for themselves with money saved from discounts offered by insurance companies and prevented losses. They are also relatively easy to install, not taking much more than a few hours for an existing house and even less time for a new house being built.

Without an operator – you – a security system leaves much to be desired. Take some time to learn and understand each of the benefits that your system provides and teach your family or loved ones how to use the system to their advantage.

  1. If you are installing a system for the first time, you owe it to yourself and to the investment you made, to take time to educate yourself and each member of the household on how to operate the system. After we had moved to our new home, we discovered someone had unplugged the main connection in the basement and after the battery backup was depleted, we were awakened at 1:30am with alarms blasting!

  2. Remember the “Old Fire Drills” in school! Make sure every member of the houssehold is on the same page. Give evryone the correct code for entry and/or lockup but have only two family members with authority to change the code. Use the full system, do not rely on posting a sign to ward off uninvited guest. Your intruders might be as smart as you.

  4. Just like any other piece of equipment, when anything goes wrong, it usually can be attributed to human error. It cannot be stated often enough it how important it is to be trained and have ALL operators trained as well.

  5. In addition to the great information provided; I have had clients in the past tell me in the past that their insurance agent asked if their home had a security system which helped lower their insurance rate a bit.

  6. The great thing about security systems is the range of services that you can have at installation. For some people, blaring lights, cameras, motion sensors, etc. are important to protect their possessions and loved ones. For others, a simple alarm system is much more affordable and desirable.

It is just one factor in your home’s security. Keeping landscaping maintained, being watchful, participating in or starting a neighborhood watch, and other factors are important as well.

  7. The best place to buy your security system is from a local dealer that has a license. Most states require legitimate dealers to possess permits for sales, it would be a good idea to check your dealer’s authorization before you buy from them.
